Transporting the New Mustang Mach E

Transporting the New Mustang Mach E

Our sister company Matheny Ford has started to see its first Full electric vehicles recently. Currently they have the Mach e GT and Ford Lighting. More are rolling in daily and our Hummer location is waiting patiently for their first all electric Hummer.
We took some time and put them Mach e on a lift so that we can look for proper hookup points and discuss transporting.
The only approved hook points are at the very front of this vehicle underneath the front bumper. They are not transport slots like we are used, to they are actually just round holes. You’ll see that they are reinforced and look like something sturdy to pull on. When using these front holes with a mini J hooks you’ll have to make sure you are using a bridal as a straight pull with a mini J-hook will tip load the hook. The lower control arms seem to have enough clearance that you could also put a nylon bridal around them like many people use for the Tesla. The front bumper also appears to have a slot for the tow pin but this particular car did not come from the factory with a tow pin.
The rear of the vehicle does not appear to have any tiedown or loading hook points. Wheel straps are recommended. We also did not notice a tow pin location for the rear bumper.
There is already reports of towing companies using the wrong holes to load or winch a vehicle. Any hole behind the front wheels and in front of the rear wheels is actually part of the high voltage battery for the car. In the pictures you’ll notice a red X over one of these holes. If that hole is used and gets ripped out the battery assembly is $27,000.
If the vehicles high voltage battery is completely dead and you need to get the vehicle to go into neutral you can remove the center panel of the frunck as well as the driver side panel. Note that these panels should be pulled directly up otherwise you’ll run the chance of breaking a clip. Once power is supplied from a jump box there is a neutral switch for the transmission directly next to the shifter.
If the vehicles been in an accident it is recommended that the high voltage battery be disconnected immediately. That disconnect is in the same area underneath the driver side panel in the frunck.
You will lift up and pull out on the connector to unplug the high-voltage battery. Once it’s unplugged there is a square slot on the back left corner that you’ll want to put a screwdriver or Allen key in. That’s to stop the connector from reconnecting itself via suction. The vehicle has a self braking system when it’s been an accident. To overcome that braking system you will have to tap on the brake pedal or the gas pedal in order to get the brake to turn off.
The owners manual suggest that These vehicles be stored outside after an accident and not in a building.
The owners manuals on these are actually located in the information system. All the towing procedures can be found there. They can also be found online or from your local Ford dealer.
Always double check proper towing procedures of any electric vehicle before Towing or Transport.
By the way both the Mach e and the Lightning Will make you smile when you hit the Excelerator!
